Chicago’s (who you may remember from ) is back with his first solo LP Sound of the Weapon under. After spending nearly a decade treading water in the underground and the local Chicago scene, Verbal Kent broke big in 2013 with an excellent EP Deer Guts and joining the -led Ugly Heroes. For this LP, Kent has linked up with another excellent producer, / affiliate, whom laced the entire project. Sound of the Weapon is a short and to the point display of lyricism and wit over hard knocking beats. Fans of will remember Verb Kent as more of a battle rapper, and Sound of the Weapon is very heavy on punchlines and quotables. The issue with battle rappers is they often can formulate songs and every track ends up sounding the same. While Sound of the Weapon isn’t what I would call groundbreaking, in terms of subject matter, he does enough to avoid sounding repetitive.
The three-part “Now or Never” is as personal as VK gets on this record; each part tells a different stage of his career. On the title track, Verb Kent talks about violence in Chicago, and along with the 9th Wonder remix (which serves as a bonus cut), it serves as the best track on the album.
“Underrated” and “No Excuse” are probably the only weak tracks on this very concise record. VK reminds me a lot of, not only in his vocal delivery, but also because he seems to work better in a group than he does by himself. Ugly Heroes was such an effective record because the personal, every man rapper nicely complemented Verbal Kent’s highly technical, battle rap lyricism. I do enjoy albums like this one, but I don’t picture myself revisiting it all that frequently.
However, I would highly recommend Sound of the Weapon for fans of battle rappers and boom bap production because this record is about as solid as it gets for that particular style of hip hop. 7/10 Tracklisting: 1) Truth 2) Body The Beat (feat.
